Chairman of the Board - Prof. Sergio Pecorelli

Education, Academia and Clinical Work:

1969: Graduated (M.D.) at the University of Pavia, cum laude.

1973: Specialization in Obstetrics and Gynecology, at the University of Milan, cum laude.

1980-81: Fellowship in Pelvic Surgery at the Mayo School of Medicine, Rochester, MN

1988: PhD in gynecologic oncology research.

1990: Full Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Brescia.

1994-96: Director of the Division of Gynecology at the European Institute of Oncology, Milan

1996-present: Chairman of the Dept Obstetrics and Gynecology and Director of the Division of Gynecologic Oncology at the University of Brescia

Present: President of the University Research Council at the University of Brescia, Italy. Dean of the School of Obstetrics at the University of Brescia.

From 1st January 1970 to December 31, 2009, Prof. Pecorelli performed and participated in more than 6,600 major surgical procedures, of which 3,739 were oncological cases.

National Appointments:

  • 1996-present: Advisor to the Scientific Director (Professor Umberto Veronesi) of the European Institute of Oncology, in Milan.
  • Since 2001 he is the Chairman of the International Scientific Advisory Board of the Golgi Foundation
  • Since November 2002 he is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Italian National Institutes of Health (Istituto Superiore di Sanita’)
  • From June 2004 to May 2007 he was the Chair of the Italian National Committee for Cancer Prevention.
  • He is a member of the Italian National Scientific Committee for Disease Control
  • Since June 11, 2009 he is the President of AIFA, the Italian Regulatory Agency for Medicines.

International appointments:

  • From 1st February 1993 to 31st January 1994, Prof. Pecorelli took a sabbatical leave from the University of Brescia as Visiting Professor at the University of California, Irvine, USA
  • Chairman of the EORTC Gynecologic Cancer Cooperative Group for 9 years (1989-1998).
  • President of the International Gynecologic Cancer Society (2000-2002).
  • Chairman of the Oncology Committee of FIGO (2006-present)

Scientific Activity:

His scientific activity is almost entirely devoted to female cancer.

He is in charge of many projects for research and treatment of gynecologic cancer.

He devoted most of his professional activity to pelvic cancer surgery, with original contributions in the field of conservative surgery for ovarian neoplasm.  He was the Principal Investigator in two important studies looking at the role of surgery both in early and in advanced ovarian cancers. He was the senior author (NEJM) of the first paper demonstrating the benefit of surgery in ovarian cancer.

He is involved in many translational research projects, some of which aiming at the production of therapeutic vaccines for cervix and ovary cancers.  He is the P.I. of the proteomic project on ovarian cancer within the agreement between the Italian and the US governments.

He is author of 306 papers , 21 book chapters and 4 books.

Honors:

In 1999 he was awarded the title of “Commander of the Order of May 5th” by the President of the Republic of Argentina, for his distinguished actions in the fight against cancer

In 2000 he was awarded the Luigi Carenza Prize for outstanding achievements in the field of Gynecology

In 2001 he was elected Honorary Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

In 2002 he was elected Honorary Fellow of the Society of Gynecologic Oncology of the Philippines.

In 2004 he was awarded the Gold Medal for Public Health by the President of the Italian Republic, the highest honor in the field in Italy.

In 2005 he was elected Honorary Fellow of the American College of Surgeons
