International Relations

The Italian Medicines Agency (AIFA) wants to give a strong boost to international relations, to further strengthen the authoritative and prestigious role that Italy already plays at European and non-European level in the field of medicinal products for human use, from a regulatory and scientific point of view.

Thus far, the results have been achieved thanks to an intentional, far-reaching view of the Agency.

Especially at European level, AIFA is dynamically involved in the scientific assessment activities performed at the European Medicines Agency (EMA) by the scientific Committees operating therein and the related working Groups; it also takes part in the working group meetings of other EU institutions and in the work of the HMA (Heads of Medicines Agencies) Network.
The experts participating in the Working Group and scientific Committees are not only AIFA personnel, but also distinguished representatives of research centers, hospitals, universities and learned societies. At international level, AIFA takes an active part in the work of prestigious international organizations, such as the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Conference on Harmonization (ICH), the Pharmaceutical Inspection Co-operation Scheme (PIC/S) and the International Coalition of Medicines Regulatory Agencies (ICMRA).

In this context, the International Relations Unit is responsible for initiating and maintaining relations between the Agency and the International Institutions/Organizations operating in the field of medicinal products for human use.
In particular, it operates to establish relations of bilateral collaboration with other countries, if not existing, as well as to broaden and strengthen existing cooperation agreements with other Regulatory Authorities; it participates in the initiatives promoted by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs with the aim of launching agreements with third countries; it coordinates the participation of AIFA experts in the training projects promoted by the European Commission or other EU Regulatory Agencies.

The Unit coordinates experts' participation in the European and International Committees and Working Groups, facilitating dissemination of relevant  information from such significant contexts to the concerned AIFA personnel , so actively contributing to the knowledge management role of the Agency.
The Unit also supports AIFA's participation in the international initiatives aimed at developing the training activities of the staff employed at European and non-European Regulatory Authorities, and also cooperates with the European Network Training Center (EU NTC); finally, with a view to enhancing international cultural exchange on scientific and regulatory issues of particular interest and relevance, it organizes study visits to the Agency for delegations from other countries.

In line with AIFA's aim of extending the investigation and research on the effects of medicinal products on vulnerable persons, such as the elderly, children and women, a project was launched addressing the theme "Access to medicines, a human right", considering the significant migration flows to Italy.
The right to health protection, recognised by the Italian law and the international legal instruments, directly concerns AIFA both in view of its role in promoting and ensuring health through an appropriate and reasonable use of medicinal products, and in the belief that access to medicines is a human right.
